Kiran Leonard recently announced details of a brand new album Western Culture, released 9th November 2018 on Moshi Moshi. Leonard plays The Portland Arms this month, tickets for his show on the 23rd are available here.

Today he shares the new video for current single “Unreflective Life”, a portrait of the lingering essence of humanity in its absence. It was shot on Super 8 yet presented in 1:1 ratio to evoke a contemporary, “internet” aesthetic relevant to the song. “I wanted every image to feel ghostly, capturing the presence of people without them ever being physically present,” says director Sam Boullier.

On the track, Leonard says, “Unreflective Life” is a song about an emptiness which is often neglected in cultural discourse in favour of an emphasis on technological hyperactivity. Instead of drawing on the (in my opinion) false cliche? of completely self-absorbed Internet users, I wanted to talk about the computer as something that disarticulates the self; something that makes the world seem impossibly huge and grotesque, that swallows its user rather than magnifying it. I like what Sam’s put together for the song because it is the antithesis of imagery normally associated with computers. These static, empty images, nonetheless touched at some point by human presence (a chair; an old factory; a discarded motorbike wheel), make the inhabited world look like a tundra.”

“Unreflective Life” follows the success of the BBC Radio 6 Music-playlisted lead single “Paralysed Force”. New album Western Culture marks a huge sonic progression due, in part, to the involvement of his venerable live band (Andrew Cheetham on drums, Dave Rowe on bass, Dan Bridgewood-Hill on guitar, synth and violin) on record for the first time. It is also the first Kiran Leonard album to have been made in a professional studio.
