A group of Cambridgeshire musicians have come together, under the collective name The Weebles, to record a fundraising single raising money for Iain McIntosh, affectionately known as Macca. The project was led by singer-songwriter Gavin Chappell-Bates who wrote ‘In My Corner’,a slice of modern Motown, alongside Macca.
Gavin told us; “We’ve been friends for over 20 years and for nearly ten of those years Macca has faced a daily battle just to live his life. He’s taken on Leukaemia, had to come to terms with losing a leg and is constantly fighting to get the adaptations and support he needs just to live independently. As I’m sure you can imagine, it’s not nice to watch someone you love go through such torment and, to be honest, I’m not quite sure how he is still here with us. But he is still with us and he keeps fighting on, no matter what gets thrown at him. Utilising this defiant spirit, Macca and I got together to write a song, even though he has no previous songwriting experience. We used the inspiration of the music and people he loves to create ‘In My Corner’, a song dedicated to the family and friends who have kept him going through dark days. We recorded the song with a collective of very talented musicians under the name of ‘The Weebles’.
We’re really proud of the song and we promise it’s not another amateur charity single. We hope it will inspire people, make them smile and get them dancing.”
Gavin pulled together a group of some of the best in Cambridge’s musical talentto record the song. ‘In My Corner’ is led
by the soulful singing of Freddie Hall, with additional vocals and guitar by Gavin. The rest of The Weebles consist of
Craig Conkie on drums (Bouquet of Dead Crows / Up & Atom), Charlie Howell on bass (Psyclonic / Up &Atom), Neil Bruce on lead guitar (Bouquet of Dead Crows), Lewis Slack on saxophone and Chas Hutchings on trumpet. The track was recorded and mixed by James Coppolaro at Mix66 and features artwork by Tom Jones
It will be released digitally on Friday 2nd February 2018 through all the usual online channels as well directly through Bandcamp at this link. All the profits from the single will go directly toward getting Macca the support he needs.
